The BEAMlab was established in 2015 at the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCT Prague. Combining engineering concepts with material science knowledge the group is currently covering several emerging areas in drug delivery, biomolecule separation and biotechnology.

To improve the drug dissolution rate and bioavailability we are combining discovery of new multicomponent solid forms such as salts, co-crystals and amorphous forms with tunable particle size and surface chemistry. As a next step materials are produced in large scales for complete characterization of the materials including in-vitro dissolution and in-vivo bioavailability testing.

Porous materials with tunable porosity and pore size distribution are finding application in enzymatically catalyzed reactions towards synthesis of biodegradable polymers, photo degradation of drugs in environment, photo catalytic preparation of hydrocarbons from CO2 and others. These materials are prepared by controlled assembly process where nano- and micro-particles of various kind and bearing various surface functionalities are used as building blocks. Tuning of preparation conditions is used to prepare materials with desired properties.

In both above mentioned areas mixing is used for process intensification or process scale-up. Characterization of the mixing performance, mass transfer or conditions resulting in material damage by stirring is done via Computational Fluid Dynamics, and covers single phase as well as multiphase flows. Underlying mechanism controlling aggregation (coalescence), breakup, growth and metabolism of cells allows us to characterize systems from laboratory to production scale.
