Application of hierarchical composite materials

Hierarchically porous materials for CO2 adsorption

The carbon dioxide emissions driven climate change being one of the biggest challenges of our time, there is quest for fast and effiective solutions, among which the CO2 removal by adsorption onto solid porous sorbents.

The aim of the project is to develop highly efficient and selective sorbent materials with hierarchical distribution of pore sizes and optimal surface functionalities to maximize their CO2 sorption capacity.

The optimization of the preparation phase of promissing base  materials, together with their  surface functionalization by suitable moieties and post-synthetic treatement for porosity differenciation,  are part of the process. The prepared materials are characterized by a combination of microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, coupled with the analyses of adsorption behaviour towards N2, CO2, CH4 and water vapour. The best performing materials are submitted to durability and scalability testing.
